Onion Rings

Onion rings are one of those ultimate game day and bar foods that seems to go well with everything!

In my last post about Fettuccine Alfredo Pasta, I made these Onion Rings along with Steak to go along with my dish.

Many people achieve the crispy batter by using a beer batter or panko/ Japanese breadcrumbs but not all the time you may have beer, club soda or special breadcrumbs.

This recipe basically uses flour, some spices, water and oil for frying. If you would like to bake them however, breadcrumbs might be your best bet.

Here is how I make my Onion Rings.

You will need:
- 1/2 of a large onion
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp all-purpose seasoning
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp white vinegar
- 1/2 cup cold water
- Oil for frying

First, cut your onion into rings. I bought the large sweet onions in the grocery but you can use any size and any amount of onions you want.

In a medium bowl, combine flour along with all the seasonings and baking soda. Mix to combine.
Then coat all the onion rings in the flour and set aside.

Start heating up your oil in a frying pan on a medium high heat. Slowly add the cold water and vinegar to flour mixture until a batter is formed. Preferably the consistency of pancake batter.

Once your oil is heated, test the temperature with two small onion rings dipped in batter. It takes about 30 seconds to a minute to turn golden brown. Once they fry well, continue dipping and frying the rest of your rings.

Place on a paper towel to drain and salt generously. Eat while hot! The coating will soften when cold.

Here is a little tip for all the guys out here. Make these for your girl to win her heart 💖

Happy Eating!

  1. I always struggle with the batter falling off while frying when I use breadcrumbs :( [I'm not one to bake when I can fry :D] Looking forward to trying this <3
